The Tale of a White Rose

Introduction...

A friend of mine lived a few miles away with her parents. She had a younger brother and an older  sister.

One day I drove by their house on a warm sunny day. As I looked at their front yard I saw a picture in my mind that I shall never forget.

I saw their front yard covered with about a foot of snow and it was a very cold winter day. But to the right of their yard I saw a white rose growing, with the moon and stars shining down on it. The star light made the rose glow,  and the crystals of snow around the rose sparkled.

I understood somehow that the rose symbolized my friend, and that she would go through a really hard time in her life (symbolized by the cold winter snow). All around her it would be barren and cold.

But in spite of her circumstances, she would continue to thrive. She would glow and sparkle in the cold winter night. This white rose would amaze everyone. She would become part of a beautiful picture that people would want to see.

I was inspired to write the poem “The Tale of a White Rose” and gave it to her.

A few years later she moved with her family to Minnesota. Shortly after that her brother committed suicide. But through that terrible tragedy, she amazed me. I’m not saying she didn’t grieve or have a hard time, but she had an inner strength that was very beautiful. She told me later, “I kept the poem in my desk drawer and took it out every so often to read it.”

Her inner strength was supernatural. She relied on Jesus Christ, who gave her the strength to go through each day. In Minnesota, where it was cold and snowy, there was a white rose that still thrived in spite of the circumstances around her.

“Fear not, for I am with you. Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, and I will help you. I will uphold you with my victorious right hand.”

Isaiah 41:10
