Daddy Smile

By Alan Pedersen, for his 18 year old daughter Ashley Marie Pedersen who was killed in a car accident.

I sat here in my easy  chair the other night

Like so many times before

Staring at her picture

Feeling sorry for  myself again

Thinking about how hard life’s been

And how much I miss her

All of a sudden it was almost like a dream

She stepped out of that picture frame

And sat right next to  me

She said, “Dad, I think it’s time we had a little conversation, a heart to heart, just you and me...”

“Daddy, everyday I look at you and what do I see? You’re crying when you’re looking back at  me.”

“Now that was OK for awhile, but you know Daddy - I miss your smile!”

CHORUS:

“Don’t cry for what can  never be. Thank God for what we had. And when you think about me now, be happy - don’t be sad. Don’t you know I’m still your little girl and  that’s what I’ll always be. Now don’t forget when you remember me - Daddy smile!

She stayed until the morning sun came up

There’s so much she had to say

So I just listened...

She said, “Daddy, how I long to hear you laugh again! It’s OK with me! So Daddy, laugh again!  The best thing you can do for me is do the best for you. I left you all my memories to help you make it through. Daddy, you’ve got so  much to give. Start giving! I will always be your sunshine, even when  it rains. Daddy, I want you to start living. Let go Daddy, let go of the pain. I’ve got to go now, I’ll see you in awhile, but until then, Daddy - SMILE!”

CHORUS

I was sitting in my  easy chair this morning

Staring at her picture

She’s so beautiful

She makes me smile

Yea - she makes her  daddy smile!
